Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - Alleyway Scene Lego MOC

Big Trouble in Little China (1986) — Chinatown Alley LEGO MOC
A Cult Classic Recreated in LEGO
Big Trouble in Little China (also known as John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China) is a 1986 American fantasy action-comedy directed by John Carpenter.
The film stars:
- Kurt Russell as Jack Burton
- Kim Cattrall as Gracie Law
- Dennis Dun as Wang Chi
- James Hong as David Lo Pan
Set largely in San Francisco’s Chinatown, the story follows truck driver Jack Burton as he helps his friend Wang Chi rescue his green-eyed fiancée from bandits — only to uncover a hidden supernatural underworld ruled by the ancient sorcerer Lo Pan.
This LEGO MOC recreates one of my favorite moments in the
entire film:
the scene where Jack and Wang chase the kidnapped love interests down what
looks like a normal Chinatown alley… right before everything spirals into big
trouble.
The LEGO MOC: Chinatown Alley Chase
This build captures:
- The narrow Chinatown alley setting
- The moment just before the gang fight erupts
- The transition from “ordinary street” to something far more dangerous
The scene combines official LEGO sets, custom minifigures, and MOC elements to stay faithful to the film while still feeling unmistakably LEGO.

Repurposed LEGO Set: Chinatown Environment
LEGO Chinese New Year 2021

A major part of this MOC was built by repurposing elements from:
Review / Source Set:
LEGO Chinese New Year 2021 – 80106 Story of Nian
This set provided:
- Traditional Chinese architectural details
- Lanterns, signage, and decorative elements
- Textures and colors perfect for a Chinatown alley
Instead of building the set as intended, I broke it down and reused:
- Wall sections for alley facades
- Decorative elements for street dressing
- Roof and trim pieces for layered urban depth
This approach allowed me to keep the scene authentic while giving the parts a completely new cinematic purpose.

Scene Location Inspiration
The alleyway gang fight scene was inspired by behind-the-scenes discussion and filming breakdowns, including community research such as:

These references helped guide the alley’s proportions, clutter, and “closed-in” feel.

Why This Scene?
Big Trouble in Little China is one of my all-time
favorite films.
This particular moment perfectly captures the movie’s tone — confidence,
confusion, humor, and danger all colliding in a single alleyway.
Recreating it in LEGO felt like the perfect way to celebrate a cult classic that still hasn’t lost its magic.
